Adding another year

Freitag, November 4th, 2016

Being an expat for quite a ling time now I have gone through that situation a couple of times in the past: the current contract is coming to an end within the next six months and therefore I should make a decision about my future.

Every expat is given a guarantee that she or he will be offered a job at the same salary at their home location when the contract ends. However, as the company can not hold a vacancy for several years, the jobs you are offered are more likely tasks no one else likes to do.

Therefore it is highly recommended to start searching for new options on your own.

Days are counted

Freitag, September 16th, 2016

Again and again it is hard to realize how quickly time is passing by. Roughly two weeks of my vacation are over and a few days are left before I need to return to Korea.

Thinking about what I have done so far, I have to admit that it may not sound too interesting or might even sound boring for some people but I do not want to miss a day.

The most thrilling thing was parachuting for sure and the afternoon was a blast. The weather couldn’t have been better and being accompanied by the entire family just made the event perfect. It felt good to share the excitement and joy with them and sitting together around a big coffee table was a great ending.

Relaxing with a thrill

Sonntag, September 11th, 2016

Time is definitely flying and the first week of my vacation is already over.

Since I am doing very hard to stay away from work and not following up on emails coming in, I found myself several times in front of my laptop answering them, forwarding them to colleagues and have short phone calls to push things forward.

I did not make a schedule for each and decide in a rather spontaneous way what I will do, and so there is the likeliness that I have time to focus on work for one or two hours.

Ready to go

Freitag, September 2nd, 2016

It is Friday evening and everything is prepared: both suitcases are packaged, hand luggage as well and in a few hours I will leave to the airport.

Today was a quite intense and very focused day at work. Due to a company almost no one could be found sitting at her or his desk at the office and when it comes to our team I was the only one who did not attend. I had decided to skip this event since I needed to finish some tasks before being out of office for more than two weeks. Moreover, I had a meeting with a supplier and a telephone conference with colleagues in Germany on my agenda.

Connection to home

Samstag, August 20th, 2016

It is five and a half years now that I am living abroad and visit my home country only when going on a business trip or being on vacation.

Before my first assignment to Beijing, the company sent every employee on a group workshop for intercultural training. One part of the training was a report from someone who had been an expat for several years and shared his – in our case it was a man – insights into daily life, challenges, experiences, happy and sad moments.

Returning home

Samstag, Juli 9th, 2016

My business trip to Germany had come to an end and it was time to pack my bags. Thinking about all the days I had spent there this time I have to conclude that the journey was quite successful: the two workshops I attended were quite successful. Many things could be clarified, questions answered, decisions made and next steps defined.

Besides I had the chance to see my family twice on the weekends and do some nice activities such as house running and skydiving.

It is different

Samstag, Juni 18th, 2016

On Monday evening I arrived in Germany after a flight of nearly 12 hours at the airport in Munich. After leaving the plane, I had to walk through several corridors to reach the security check for my connecting flight. Moving the feet and legs felt pretty good after sitting for a long time with only a small alley to walk back and forth when going to the toilet.

At the security check I immediately realized that I am no longer in Korea. There was no friendly “Hello” by the staff and the atmosphere was more like being investigated by the police rather than a simple security check.

Don’t know what to do

Samstag, April 9th, 2016

After leaving Beijing in spring 2011 I have always been thinking of the friends and people I won’t be able to see any more on a regular basis.

Though we did not meet every week it was good to see them every once in a while for a cup of coffee or a walk in one of Beijing’s parks.

Some of them had become close friends and we often had talks about personal topics I did not share with everyone. Also they allowed me a deeper look into their private life, introducing unknown aspects of life as a Chinese.

Homesick in a different way

Donnerstag, Juli 9th, 2015

Throughout the years of living abroad there have been very few occasions I felt homesick.

Modern means of communication make it easy to stay in touch with friends and family in my home country and so borders more and more vanish. They remain only in terms of geographical distance.

Like nothing

Sonntag, Juni 28th, 2015

A few minutes ago I finished preparing my luggage. The only things altho are missing are the tooth brush and my shaving equipment which I will add tomorrow morning.

Then it will be time to go back home to Seoul after 9 days.  For me it feels as if the time here passed by like nothing. I remember very well sitting together with my brother, his wife and kids as well as my parents one week ago. We spent an entire afternoon together exchanging the latest news, the kids were playing with the gifts I had brought and everyone was just happy.
